The Basic Structure of Die Casting Molds

The basic structure of a die casting mold consists of several main parts. The mold base is the foundation that provides support and stability. It is usually made of a strong and rigid material. The fixed half and the moving half of the mold are two essential components. The fixed half, also known as the cover half, remains stationary during the die casting process. It contains part of the mold cavity and the sprue, which is the inlet for the molten metal. The moving half, or ejector half, is movable and houses the ejector system. When the casting is solidified, the moving half moves to eject the casting from the mold.

The mold cavity is where the molten metal takes the shape of the final casting. It is precision-machined and has the exact dimensions and surface finish required. Cores are used to create internal features or cavities in the casting. They can be fixed or movable. The runner system includes the sprue, runners, and gates. The sprue is the main channel through which the molten metal enters the mold. The runners distribute the metal to different parts of the cavity, and the gates control the flow rate and direction of the metal into the cavity. The ejector system consists of ejector pins, sleeves, and plates. It is used to push the casting out of the mold after solidification. Cooling channels are incorporated in the mold to regulate the temperature. By circulating a coolant, usually water, the cooling channels help to solidify the molten metal more quickly and evenly, improving the production cycle time and the quality of the casting. Venting channels are also present to allow air and gases to escape from the mold cavity during the injection process.
