How to Relieve Stress in 6061 Die-Cast Aluminum
Relieving stress in 6061 die-cast aluminum is crucial to ensure the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the final product. One common method is thermal stress relieving. The die-cast aluminum part is heated to a specific temperature range, typically between 300°C and 400°C, and held at that temperature for a certain period, usually 1 to 3 hours depending on the size and complexity of the part. This allows the internal stresses to be reduced as the atoms within the metal structure have the opportunity to rearrange themselves. After the soaking time, the part is slowly cooled in a controlled environment, such as in a furnace with a gradually decreasing temperature or in still air.
Another approach is mechanical stress relieving. This involves subjecting the die-cast part to a controlled amount of plastic deformation. For example, shot peening can be used, where small spherical particles are bombarded onto the surface of the aluminum part. This induces compressive stresses on the surface, which can counterbalance the internal tensile stresses and improve the fatigue resistance of the part. However, the intensity and coverage of shot peening need to be carefully controlled to avoid over-deforming the part.
Vibration stress relieving is also an option. The die-cast aluminum part is placed on a vibrating platform that generates specific frequencies and amplitudes of vibration. The vibration energy helps to break up and redistribute the internal stress concentrations. This method is relatively non-destructive and can be effective for parts with complex geometries where thermal or mechanical methods may have limitations. Additionally, a combination of these stress relieving methods can sometimes be employed to achieve the best results, especially for critical components where high dimensional accuracy and long-term durability are required.
