In the processing of die-casting parts, defects in castings are a normal phenomenon. Today, we will introduce one of the main culprits that cause castings to be scrapped - cold shuts.

Cold shut, the reason for its appearance is related to its name. Cold shut refers to the gap phenomenon that occurs after two streams of metal liquid meet, due to the inability to completely melt. It is in two states of penetration and non penetration, often appearing on the surface and thin-walled parts of castings. The reasons for the occurrence of cold shuts are also related to temperature. Either the temperature of the metal liquid is too low or the temperature of the mold is too low, which causes the two solutions to not merge smoothly during the production process. After excluding the temperature factor, it is found that there are still problems, which may be due to the impure chemical composition of the alloy, impurities or weak fluidity of the metal liquid. The occurrence of cold shuts is not only due to the above problems, but also due to the unreasonable design of the mold structure and uneven thickness of the casting section. Based on the reasons for its occurrence, we can develop a correct plan to eliminate it. Firstly, the temperature of the mold and the pouring temperature should be controlled. Secondly, the composition of the metal should be modified to improve fluidity. Finally, the mold structure should be designed reasonably to avoid obstruction of the metal liquid flow.
