What is the process of die-casting

Die casting is a metal forming process.

Essentially, it is the rapid injection of liquid or semi liquid metal into the mold cavity under high pressure, and the metal is cooled and solidified inside the mold to form parts with certain shape, size, and precision requirements.

In the die-casting process, the key elements include pressure, speed, and mold. Pressure is the core of die-casting, and high pressure enables the metal to fill every corner of the mold cavity in a very short time, thereby ensuring the integrity of the parts. This pressure is usually provided by a die-casting machine, and the injection system of the die-casting machine can generate enormous pressure to ensure smooth filling of the molten metal. In terms of speed, the filling speed of the metal liquid is very fast, which is beneficial for filling the mold cavity before the metal solidifies, and can also reduce the time for the metal liquid to come into contact with air in the mold cavity, reducing the probability of defects such as pores.

Molds play a decisive role in the die-casting process. The design and manufacturing quality of molds directly affect the quality of die-casting parts. The shape of the mold cavity determines the shape of the die casting, while factors such as mold accuracy and surface quality affect the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the die casting.

Die casting technology has many advantages. It can produce parts with complex shapes, whether they have complex internal structures or external contours, which can be achieved through die-casting. Moreover, the dimensional accuracy of die cast parts is high, generally reaching IT11-IT13 levels, with low surface roughness values, which can reduce subsequent mechanical processing steps. At the same time, the production efficiency of die-casting is very high, suitable for large-scale production.

However, the die-casting process also has certain limitations. For example, due to the fast filling speed of molten metal, it is easy to get gas involved, which may lead to defects such as pores inside the parts. Moreover, the cost of die-casting molds is relatively high, requiring significant upfront investment.
