Surface Treatment of Die Casting Molds

Surface treatment of die-casting molds is crucial for improving their performance and lifespan.

During the working process, die-casting molds are subject to erosion and corrosion from high temperature, high pressure, and high-speed flowing metal liquids, as well as frequent mechanical impacts and friction. Therefore, the surface of the mold needs special treatment to improve its wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal fatigue resistance, and demolding performance.

Common surface treatment methods for die-casting molds include nitriding treatment, hard chromium plating treatment, PVD coating, etc.

Nitriding treatment is a commonly used surface treatment method that can form a high hardness and wear-resistant nitride layer on the surface of the mold. The surface hardness of the mold after nitriding treatment can reach HV1000 or above, which can effectively resist the erosion and friction of the metal liquid. At the same time, the nitride layer also has good corrosion resistance and thermal fatigue resistance, which can extend the service life of the mold.

Hard chrome plating treatment is the process of depositing a layer of chromium with high hardness and good wear resistance on the surface of the mold. The surface hardness of the mold after hard chrome plating can reach HV800 or above, which can improve the wear resistance and demolding performance of the mold. At the same time, the chromium layer also has good corrosion resistance and decorative properties, which can make the surface of the mold more beautiful.

PVD coating is an advanced surface treatment method that can form a layer of high hardness, good wear resistance, and strong corrosion resistance coating on the surface of the mold. There are many types of PVD coatings, such as TiN, TiCN, CrN, etc., and different coatings have different performance characteristics. The surface hardness of the mold after PVD coating can reach HV2000 or above, which can effectively improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the mold.

In short, surface treatment of die-casting molds is an important means to improve mold performance and lifespan. Choosing the appropriate surface treatment method can be comprehensively considered based on factors such as the working conditions, service life requirements, and cost of the mold.
